Crafting Your Artist Statement

  • Robin Cembalest Editorial Strategies 205 3rd Avenue New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

Every creative professional needs that foundational text that sums up who they are, what they do, and why they do it.

This class will give you the tools to craft and refine your bio and statement to explain your work as powerfully--and artfully--as you can.

A widely published writer and the former editor of ARTnews, Robin teaches this class at residencies, art schools, and art advocacy organizations. She'll share templates for both bio and statement; offer examples for describing artistic identity, process, and the work's larger meaning; and give actionable tips for each participant's text.

“Robin’s delivery is relaxed and comfortable as she demystifies the writing process for artists. After she broke down all the parts of well-written editorial structures, I left feeling confident that I had the ingredients to cook up my own written content for short and long artist bios and statements for all sorts of contexts, as well as some key tweaks to optimize my Instagram and website.”
—Eva Avenue, artist and student recruiter, Art Students League
